Special Olympics Team Powered by LUCELEC Comes Home

The triumphant Saint Lucia Special Olympics team returned to a hero’s welcome on Saturday, March 23. Powered by LUCELEC, the team amassed gold in football, one silver in track and field and one gold and three bronze in bocce. The Special Olympics World Games was held in Abu Dhabi from March 14 to 21.

The Special Olympics World Games is a major event put on by the Special Olympics in two-year cycles, recurring every fourth year. To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, an athlete must be at least 8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays (a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child).

We have been a longstanding partner, supporting the national team who continues to perform exceedingly well. No less than the Prime Minister joined family, friends and sponsors of the team in the VIP lounge at the Hewanorra International Airport to welcome the team home.

It was a well-deserved cause for celebration.
