Team Members Feed the Elderly on Good Deeds Day

The MD was at the head of the serving line. He took directions from Samantha. She knew every resident by name, what they ate and how much of it they would want. She drilled out with no lists; all this information was committed to memory. Also on the serving line was HR’s Tandi Flood and Kisha Browne from Credit Control.

It was Good Deeds Day and members of Team LUCELEC were on board to feed the residents of the St Lucy’s Home. The day was Friday, April 5. The company and Cox & Company paid for and then fed each person now calling St Lucy’s home.

Good Deeds Day is a global day that unites people from over 100 countries to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet. The day puts into practice the simple idea that every single person can do a good deed, be it large or small, to improve the lives of others and positively impact the world.  The observance began in 2007. Every year since, millions of people from thousands of organizations and businesses join together each year to do good.

The international observance of Good Deeds Day is Sunday, April 7. In India, the birthplace of the movement, the day was observed on April 2. Good Deeds Day has become the leading day of giving with individuals, school children, students, soldiers and employees from many businesses joining in for the annual Good Deeds Day with the aim of doing a good deed for others. In Saint Lucia, the movement is coordinated by Volunteer Saint Lucia.

A plate of lunch was delivered to every resident. The bell was then rung and prayers said before everyone ate. For those who couldn’t make it the lunch tables in the basement of the home, lunch was taken to them. For those upstairs, some lay in bed and ate. Others sat in chairs. One man sat in a prized spot under a tree. For a few residents, their meals were served with conversation and companionship from the volunteers. Still others, had to be held and fed.

The residents shared their stories. Where they were from, how did they end up here and their thoughts on the life they currently enjoy. And then, invitations to come back, anytime were extended.

Before we left, the company donated $10,000 to St Lucy’s. Good deeds and good work. We are now part of a movement that boasted over 3 million people and 7 million hours of volunteer hours in 2018.

And it doesn’t have to stop there. When making a cup of tea in the mess room, offer to do the same for a team member. If you are treating your child to a movie, invite another from the neighbourhood. Good deeds like our Core Value “Caring” simply asks us to demonstrate value for another. Receive it and spread it around.

The company’s Good Deeds treat for St Lucy’s home also included dinner to be served by the home.
