Celebrating Our Health & Safety Committee

Commitment to a Safer Workplace

Every March, LUCELEC celebrates Health & Safety Month, a period dedicated to raising awareness and promoting a safety culture across our organization. This March, the committee celebrates 29 years of the observance under the theme ‘60 Years of Powering Progress: Safety at the Core of our Journey’, paying homage to our company’s 60th anniversary.

With a month-long calendar of activities, the committee has developed quizzes, trainings, health screenings and presentations, to educate and engage team members on health and safety related topics. The efforts to bring these engaging activities are a testament to the dedication of our multi-departmental team under the former HSESO Ms. Priscilia Stanislas and current leadership of HSESO Mr. Mabius Francis.

Aims and Objectives of the Health & Safety Committee

The Health & Safety Committee’s aim is to raise awareness and reinforce our commitment to workplace safety. The team fosters a sense of collective and individual responsibility and encourages active participation in promoting a safe workplace throughout the year.

They are responsible for inspections and assessments of all our facilities (powerplant, substations and offices), ensuring all hazards, potential risks and the like are noted and mitigated. The committee seeks to effectively engage employees and strengthen our safety culture by aligning activities with the year's theme.

Core Responsibilities & Activities

  • Plant, Substations & Office Inspections
  • Incident/Accident Reporting
  • Employment Injury Investigations
  • SafetyWise: Health & Safety Advice for Workers
  • Safety Recommendations
  • Employee Health Screenings
  • Health Management
  • Encourage Work-Life Balance

Power Plant Inspections: A Critical Component

Our health and safety efforts involve regular power plant and substation inspections by the committee. These in-person inspections are crucial for identifying faults, hazards, and general red flags that could compromise our systems, infrastructure, or general safety. The team’s diligence in these inspections ensures that potential dangers are promptly addressed, maintaining a safe working environment for everyone.

The Importance of Employee Diligence

Health and safety are everyone’s responsibility. We must remain vigilant and proactive in identifying and reporting hazards. Whether it is a minor issue at our compounds or a significant infrastructure concern across Saint Lucia, raising the alarm can prevent accidents and save lives.

Our collective effort in maintaining a safe workplace is essential for the well-being of all team members. The committee, at the Opening Ceremony of our 2025 Health & Safety Month, launched a Near-Miss Reporting Form that allows team members to report any potential hazards and near misses, providing a proactive approach to ensuring safety.

A Legacy of Passion and Commitment

As we look forward to the future, we must acknowledge the incredible impact of our former HSESO. Priscilia’s vision and passion have driven the expansion of the Health & Safety Committee and what was once a weeklong celebration to a month of activities. During her keynote speech at this year’s Health & Safety Month opening ceremony, she shared that LUCELEC’s 60-year progress success story focuses not just on “generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity, but on consistently ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of employees, customers, and the public at large are at the very heart of everything we do.

The Health & Safety Committee under the new leadership of Mabius Francis continues to foster a culture of safety, health and wellness across our organization.

Ronald Baptiste noted, "Health and Safety Month at our company has blossomed over the years into a way of life. Health and Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we are on the right path towards having a vibrant health and safety culture at our company. The challenge is always strengthening what works and finding more creative or better strategies".
