My Internship Journey

Growing up, I’ve associated LUCELEC with corporate work: emails, reports, meetings. As such, I expected my internship at LUCELEC to be monotonous, long and tedious. Contrarily, my time in the Corporate Communications Department (CCD) would prove to be quite different. As I type this at the end of my tenure, words like collaborative, dynamic, and engaging best encapsulate my time in CCD.

I felt a part of the Corporate Comms Department and enjoyed how well they worked together. Though I was only an intern for a little over a month, I believe CCD have proven to be a very close-knit and small but powerful team. The team is quite diligent and tries their best to ensure that the various departments and units are equally attended to. As the primary correspondents of the company, this department is very proactive, so I was always preoccupied. Though they have a lot of work, they tried to involve me in any trip or project they believed would broaden my scope of the company or pique my interest. Whether it be attending conferences such as Executive on the Road or having me assist with wider company projects, they ensured I was thoroughly engaged. It’s very nice to work with a group that makes you feel integrated in the team and not just a stranger lingering around for a while.

There were very few times I was bored, as I was always involved in a variety of work whilst here. I've engaged in a lot of graphic design work, whether it be creating templates for PowerPoint presentations or creating infographics to circulate around the company. I surveyed and reviewed the EIC and learnt some aspects of web design. I was also exposed to other tasks, such as reviewing and editing RFPs, HLBCs and annual reports, recording and taking photos, assisting with event logistics, making sponsorship calls, and transcribing audio to produce video news releases (VNRs). The dynamic nature of the workflow ensured I was exposed to a wide range of experiences whilst at LUCELEC.

The most welcomed surprise was how involved the work forced me to be. Everything I was tasked with required me actually investing time and effort. It helped reignite by creative thinking, forced me to explore new things and generated genuine care for the company and its mission. Putting effort into the work refined my graphic design practices, had me practicing with a camera, and methodically re-reading and rewording documents I wrote. Every time I saw others interacting with the products made or simply engaging other co-workers from different departments, I felt content.

This experience showed me that corporate work does not have to be draining, repetitive and stiff. I am a very passionate person, and I love to work with a team that reflected and encouraged that intense fervor.
