Presentation Summary: Anxiety, Depression & Family/Work Relations

Presented by: Ms. Francisca Plummer

Date: March 25, 2025

As part of LUCELEC’s Health & Safety Month 2025, Ms. Plummer led a thought-provoking session exploring the inner emotional world and its connection to mental health, family life, and the workplace.

Key takeaways include:

Understanding Your Internal World

  • Pay attention to your emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations.
  • Mental wellness involves recognizing a full range of emotions—not just one dominant feeling like anger or sadness.
  • Reflect on how you manage emotions and what you focus your attention on (e.g., positive vs. negative outlooks).

Mental Health Red Flags

  • Restricted emotional range, unmanaged intense emotions, and disconnect between expressed and felt emotions can signal deeper issues.
  • Suppressing or dismissing emotions may impact mental well-being.

Role of Therapy

  • Initial consultations involve exploring one’s mood, relationships, family history, and other life influences.
  • Therapy offers a space for guided self-understanding and can help uncover contributing factors that may not be immediately obvious.

Sexual Health & Stress

  • A healthy sexual relationship in a secure, committed context can positively support mental wellness.
  • However, using sex as an escape from emotional pain may lead to additional challenges, including emotional dissatisfaction and health risks.

When to Consider Medication

  • Medication may be appropriate if symptoms of anxiety or depression significantly impair daily functioning.
  • Speaking with a trusted general practitioner is often a good first step toward understanding treatment options.

Support for LUCELEC Staff

  • Employees are entitled to three counseling sessions, so it’s important to be focused and strategic during those meetings.
  • Ms. Plummer emphasized that seeking help is a sign of strength and encouraged staff not to suffer in silence.

Ms. Plummer closed by reminding us that mental health matters, and professional support is available for those who need it.
