Generation

The Generation Department produces all the electricity we sell. With a staff complement of 54, they’re the largest department in the company. They operate a modern, computerized generating facility of 10 generators at Cul De Sac with an available capacity of 88.4 MW. They also oversee a 3MW solar farm in La Tourney, Vieux-Fort. 

Together, the plants produce more than 360 million electricity units each year to meet the country’s demand for electricity. The most recent system peak (the heaviest demand on the system at one time) was 61.7MW in 2018. Annual load growth is expected at an average of 1.43% over the next five years. Keeping track of the load growth tells us when we may need additional generation to meet the demand. 

Generation has three sections - Operations, Maintenance and Garage Services. 

Operations never sleeps. They’re on 24/7/365 (and 366 in a leap year)! 

  • Is staffed with Shift Operators, a Senior Supervisor and Shift Attendants
  • Uses a computerized distributed control system to monitor and control plant operations, and ensure the safe and efficient running of the generators, and other equipment in the station

Maintenance maintains all the generators at Cul-de-Sac. 

  • They service, repair and overhaul the engines in line with approved practices and recommendations from the manufacturers
  • There is a computerized maintenance management system that facilitates tracking and planning of all maintenance activities
  • Our experienced supervisors, mechanics, electricians and technical clerks work together for the continued long life and excellent service of the plant
  • The maintenance of the solar farm is currently being done under contract by GRUPOTEC, the company that built it

Garage Services is headed by the Garage Supervisor, and his team of experienced mechanics.

  • They maintain our fleet of approximately 60 vehicles 
  • The trucks and vans power our customer service in the community
  • They attend to problems and provide support to new and existing customers
  • The section ensure the vehicles are kept in road worthy condition for the safety of our colleagues who drive them

All the hard work pays off. We have a reputation as one of the best maintained power plants.  In fact, in 2003 the Company received an award for consistently being the best maintained Wartsila Diesel Power Plant Worldwide from 1998 – 2002.  Worldwide! You saw that, right? That’s no mean feat! And the Generation Team is, quite rightly, proud of that achievement, and continue to work to maintain our rep!
