Health, Safety, Environment & Security
LUCELEC prides itself on safety. Health Safety Environment and Security Officer (HSESO) is responsible for the management of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), including risk management, of strategic and operational functions. The key accountable areas are:
- Health
- Safety
- Environment
- Security
- Disaster Management
- Wellness
The safety and security of LUCELEC’s assets is an absolute necessity as the major supplier of electricity to St. Lucia. Our level of planning and preparedness to manage emergencies and disasters and regain normal operations is critical to the maintenance of the island's electricity supply.
The HSESO contributes significantly to the reduction of operational risk to LUCELEC, particularly in preventing occupational injury to employees by ensuring that we utilise the appropriate personal protective equipment and obtain relevant safety training.
The integration of proper HSES management practices have contributed to the positive improvements in our health and safety culture. The effective management has also resulted in the protection and preservation of all of the company’s assets and reduced security risk.
The HSESO work functions are integrated with all areas of LUCELEC’s operation whether simple or complex. This requires in-depth and detailed knowledge of all work conducted by LUCELEC and collaboration and cooperation with all areas of our operations to ensure adequate risk management in health, safety and security. This enables us to mitigate risks throughout all of our operations.
Some of the key areas of responsibility for the HSESO are as follows:
- Compliance with the law (St. Lucia Labor Code 2006) to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
- Ensuring that work is done safely and that workers are not being injured in the course of or as a result of work done for and on behalf of the company. (No work should be done if it is not done safely.)
- Ensure that our operations do not negatively impact the environment.
- Securing LUCELEC’s most valuable assets: its employees, infrastructure, generation plant and all company locations.
- Maintaining the health and wellbeing of LUCELEC’s workforce to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency.
- Preparing LUCELEC for minor and major emergencies and disasters
- Mitigating and controlling risks of hazards generated in the line of duty.
- Conducting risk assessments, identifying and implementing risk control measures to ensure business continuity where there are changes to LUCELEC’s work processes and operations
- Promoting continuous improvement of health and safety culture throughout the Company.
