Information Systems

The machine you work from, the ID that gave you access to company facilities, and every email, telephone and printer you use, is all part of a network designed, maintained, upgraded and serviced by the Information Systems Department. Around here, we simply call them IS. It is the small department whose role is greater than the sum of its computer and systems specialists and technicians parts.
IS oversees the design and implementation of various IT infrastructure. They keep us on the cutting edge of the latest tech in two parts. First, by staying abreast with available and emerging Information systems to recommend appropriate areas for upgrade or improvement. Second, they work with Department Heads on the usefulness of existing systems to ensure maximum function.
IS is a tech checkpoint. They appraise cost of IT investments and provide appropriate justification. They audit the communication network, identify weaknesses in its infrastructure and design plans for its strategic development. They evaluate all systems before they are incorporated on the network and identify risks the information systems and the organization may be exposed so that counter measures to reduce, avoid or transfer such risks can be developed.
The information you access through files on your computer is stored on the company’s servers at the main office in Sans Souci and at Cul-de-Sac. The servers contain stored information vital to our operations. That includes servers for the mail system, as well as others for operating systems used by various departments like Accounts, Customer Service and Transmission & Distribution. The IS Department also builds and maintains the computer network including the devices and servers used at the LUCELEC offices in Rodney Bay, Vieux-Fort and Soufriere. In a move designed to ensure the company stays on the cutting edge of technology, the Department also uses server virtualization to ensure high availability of the company’s systems.
IS also creates and edits the profile for each employee as well as enables access to information based on the role performed in the company. These same guidelines determine the level of telephone and computer access the Department assigns.
There are some Departments who rely more heavily on IS than others. That includes Customer Service for whom an Applications Analyst oversees the Customer Information System (CIS), database administration, advanced querying, report design and analysis. The Department performs a similar function for the JDE system utilized by all Departments, especially Finance & Accounts.
