Solar Farm

A major part of LUCELEC’s SBP 2035 is transitioning towards adding renewable energy to our mix of generation. A major milestone in this journey was achieved on April 9, 2018, when our 3-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Vieux Fort officially came online.

This initiative supports our goal of increasing the use of indigenous renewable energy and reducing our reliance on diesel-based fossil fuels. At launch, the solar farm was expected to generate approximately 7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, enough to reduce fuel consumption by around 300,000 gallons per year.

Just over a year into operation, the solar farm exceeded expectations. By July 2019, it had produced 9,095,250 kWh of electricity, resulting in a fuel savings of approximately 468,296 gallons. Based on average fuel prices during that period, this translated into an estimated $3.61 million in savings, benefits that were passed on to our customers through lower electricity costs.
